Voting and Elections

Absentee and Early Voting

 How do I make sure my vote is counted in an election?

  • If you choose to vote in person in your county, you will place your completed ballot in the vote-counting machine and view that it has been counted.
  • For those voters using an absentee ballot, you can track your ballot HERE.
  • If you mail your ballot back, but it still has not been received by Election Day, you still have the option to go to a polling place and cast a ballot. You will need to sign an affidavit canceling the mailed ballot you submitted.

What if I receive my absentee ballot but don’t mail it back in time. What can I do?

  • There are multiple ways for voters to return their absentee ballot. If mailing your absentee ballot, it is recommended that you as early as possible to ensure timely delivery. You can also drop off your ballot at your county clerk’s office or at any polling location in your county.

    Absentee voting by mail or in person

    Voters may cast an absentee ballot or vote in person at their local County Clerk’s office or an early voting location prior to Election Day. No excuse is required to vote with an absentee ballot. Visit NMVote.org to request an absentee ballot, find an early voting location, and more!

     Request an Absentee Ballot

    Request an absentee ballot by filling out an application and returning it to your local County Clerk. Applications can be obtained by:

      A ballot will be sent to voters who have properly filled out the application.

      To check the status of your Absentee Application, go here or contact your County Clerk’s Office.

      If you do not receive the absentee ballot, please contact the County Clerk’s Office.

      Request an Accessible Absentee Ballot

      New Mexico has designed absentee ballots so that a voter who is visually impaired may independently use their screen reader technology to mark their ballot.

      • Fill out an application online by CLICKING HERE.
      • An email address is required for delivery of the electronic absentee ballot.
      • Please read and complete the certification document required to provide the electronic absentee ballot.

      A ballot will be emailed to voters who have properly filled out the application and an official return envelope will be mailed and must be used to return the absentee ballot.

      If you do not receive an email with a link to your absentee ballot, please contact the County Clerk’s Office.

      Permanent Absentee List

      Eligible voters can now opt-in to the permanent absentee list to automatically be sent an absentee (mail-in) ballot for each statewide election by their county clerk.

      Voters can sign up for the permanent absentee list while requesting an absentee ballot through NMVOTE.ORG – the option is available during “Step 4 – Ballot Delivery Method” where the voter will check a box to be added to the list (if they are eligible).

      Voters can also sign up for the permanent absentee list by checking a box on the paper voter registration form.

      NOTE:Voters are not eligible for the permanent absentee list if they want their ballot delivered to an out of state address.

      Voters can request to be removed from the list at any time by contacting their county clerk.

      A voter will be removed from the voluntary permanent absentee list by the county clerk for the following reasons:

      (1) the voter fails to return a mailed ballot in two consecutive elections, including at least one general election;

      (2) the county clerk has sent a mailed ballot or other piece of election mail to the voter’s mailing address and was then returned as undeliverable;

      (3) the voter’s certificate of registration is canceled;

      (4) the voter updates their certificate of registration indicating an address that is outside of the county for which the voter is listed on the voluntary permanent absentee voter list; or

      (5) the voter submits a written request to the county clerk requesting to be removed from the voluntary permanent absentee voter list.

      Return an Absentee Ballot

      All absentee ballots may be returned to the County Clerk’s Office or any Election Day polling location no later than 7:00 PM  Election Day.
