Native American Voting Rights Act
Native American Voting Rights Act (NAVRA)
Passed by the legislature and signed into law in 2023, the Native American Voting Rights Act bolstered ballot access for Indigenous, tribal, and Pueblo communities throughout New Mexico by ensuring they have input on polling locations, ballot box placements, and the creation of new precincts during redistricting.
The following are important timelines under the act.

Designation of Governmental and Official Building as Mailing Addresses |
A tribe, pueblo or Indian Nation may designate a government or official building for the delivery of mailed ballots or for use on voter registrations for members of that Indian nations, tribe or pueblo. The written request must comply with Subsection D of Section 1-21A-1 NMSA 1978 and 1.10.12.19 NMAC. |
Requests shall be made to the Secretary of State in March or April of any year. (1.10.12.19 NMAC) |
Election Day Polling Location Requests |
The written request must comply with Subsection D of Section 1-21A-1 NMSA. |
Requests shall be made to the appropriate county clerk between the second Tuesday in March and the second Tuesday in April of each even-numbered year. (1-21A-4 NMSA 1978) |
Early Voting Polling Location Requests |
The written request must comply with Subsection D of Section 1-21A-1 NMSA. |
Requests shall be made to the appropriate county clerk between the second Tuesday in March and the second Tuesday in April of each odd-numbered year or in January of even-numbered years prior to the issuance of the election proclamation. (1-21A-4 NMSA 1978) |
