Proclamation
Pursuant to 1-8-12, NMSA 1978, the Secretary of State shall by resolution issue a public proclamation in Spanish and English calling a Primary and General Election. The proclamation for the 2024 Election was Issued on January 29, 2024.

Proclamation Amendment
The Secretary of State may amend the election proclamation by March 5, 2024.

Note: Candidates must print completed online nominating petition pages and include them with required forms when filing for candidacy.
– Minor party forms and calculations will be available in March 2024 (pursuant to 1-8-50 (E), NMSA 1978).
2024 Primary Election Overview
The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. There are three major political parties in the state: Democratic, Libertarian, Republican.
When to File
Candidates will file with their proper filing officer (see section below “Where to File – Proper Filing Officer”), between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the following dates:
- February 6, 2024 – Pre-Primary Designation Candidates
- March 12, 2024 – All other offices and candidates who failed to receive party designation
- March 19, 2024 – Write-in Candidates and final opportunity for Pre-Primary designation candidates who failed to receive party designation
Where to File – Proper Filing Officer
Declarations of candidacy, nominating petitions (if required), and any other candidate qualification document(s) will be filed with the proper filing officer on the dates listed above.
The proper filing officer for each office is outlined in 1-1-5.9, NMSA 1978, and is as follows:
- Statewide and federal offices will file with the Secretary of State.
- All other candidates will file with the county clerk in the county in which the candidate resides.
