2022 General Election Candidate Information
2022 General Election Overview
The General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. The Secretary of State issued a public proclamation calling for the election on Monday, January 31, 2022.
When to File
Candidate filing day for Independent, Minor Party and Write-In Candidates for the 2022 General Election is THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2022 – between 9:00am and 5:00pm.
Where to File – Proper Filing Officer
Declarations of candidacy and candidate qualification documents by any candidate for statewide or federal office – will file with the Secretary of State
Declarations of candidacy and candidate qualification documents by all other candidates – will file with the county clerk of the county in which the candidate resides
What to File
Each Candidate filing to appear on the General Election ballot must submit a Declaration of Candidacy (and any other required forms) to their proper filing officer (see above section “Where to File – Proper Filing Officer”), during the designated hours.
Nominating Petitions
One of the first steps candidates take to get on the ballot is gathering signatures on petition forms from registered voters in their district. District boundaries were redrawn in December 2021 by the legislature, using 2020 Census data. Receipt of valid signatures on a petition form are based on the official district boundaries set by the legislature.
To ensure that candidates are collecting valid signatures from the proper district, it is essential that districted office candidates use only the forms published by our Office. We encourage candidates or their representatives to contact our Office with any questions about this process and any district changes.
Candidate Filing Forms
Financial Disclosure Statements
New candidates (not an incumbent) for legislative or statewide office, must complete a financial disclosure statement before candidate filing day and bring a copy when filing for candidacy.
Financial disclosure filings must be completed online through the Secretary of State’s Campaign Finance Information System (CFIS) HERE.

Register your committee campaign online at https://login.cfis.sos.state.nm.us/. The registration process is completed electronically and available to download and print after registration. Please bring a copy when you file for candidacy. All candidates will need to create an account whether they receive campaign contributions or make campaign expenditures or choose not to.
